Nothing gets me going like a project. The Calligraphy and Letter Writing project of the last few weeks has really gotten my creative juices flowing. But what do you do with that creative energy?
1. Dive In
I've always had some creative outlet, whether it be cooking, painting, or writing. And while the specifics have changed over the years, I know that to keep myself balanced, I have to maintain that creativity in whatever form it takes. I have to dive into a project and let it consume me until it runs out.
If you haven't explored different mediums of art this can be overwhelming. But if you allow yourself to create for no other reason than for arts sake you will start to feel the freedom that creation brings. 2. Don't Judge
I read somewhere that you should embrace being a beginner. I love that! We spend so much of our lives working to be the best at things that, as adults, we forget what it is like to start something new. Maybe you will pick up a watercolor brush and paints and it is second nature to you. Or perhaps you will look at your first attempts and wonder if you should continue. Either way, you should continue. Don't rush to be the best because you really do learn something by making something you don't like.
3. Be Inspired
Look for ways to expand your creativity everywhere because inspiration is literally everywhere. Find out who's work speaks to you and put your admiration to work. One of the reasons that I am so drawn to art and artists is that the work is so personal. Your inspiration and your way of seeing the world is different than anyone else's view. We all have something to share.
4. Share Your Art!
Whether or not you think it is "good enough," share your art with the world. Don't hide it under a rock or leave it to fester in your brain. Wake up in the morning and create something and then put it out there. I believe that the more we are brave with our voices, the truer they become.
I've had such a great time over the past month making cards for the sake of practicing art. I would love to hear and see what you are working on. Share it with me on Facebook or Instagram. And I will leave you with a little something to add to your To Do list - Best, Margaret What I am putting out in the worldWe are more than half way through April and my Card Making / Give Away is in full swing! There is still time for you to send me your quote and receive a hand made card. Please don't be shy! So far I have cards going to Canada, the US and Indonesia! Though I am hoping to send to a few more countries before the end. I love that I've gotten quotes in 3 languages. It has been a good challenge for me to work not only on the letters but include accents. I feel like I am falling into a style and rhythm. Here is a peek at some of the cards sent out in the first round. I hope that my little project has inspired you to reach out to a friend this month. If you already received your card, I hope you love it! And I hope you will pass this little project on to a friend. The more the merrier!!
If you like the cards you see here, you can check out my new Etsy shop! It's expanding all the time and we will soon be doing custom orders as well. Thanks so much for all your support in the project. Margaret The United State Post Office has deemed April National Letter Writing Month. So in honor of my native land, I am bring the tradition to Canada. {I'm sure no one minds!} But as I was getting out my address book, I realized an opportunity. I could combine my new hobby of calligraphy with the letter writing campaign and pass the letter writing bug on to you. That's right, its our first give away! Here's what I had in mind.
This little project will probably extend past April 30 {we all know why it is called snail mail}, but any quote/saying that I receive before the first of May will be included.
This is great practice for me so, please, do not be shy to pass it on to your friends! Email quotes and your information to [email protected] I love trying out new DIY crafts and Easter provides the perfect excuse to get creative. If you are feeling the creative spark, here are my top 5 to try. 1. Lovely Indeed {Typography Easter Eggs}I first saw this one on Instagram and fell in love {I said a Hip Hop....}. It takes a serious crafter, with a silhouette or a cricut but I am willing to be that serious crafter. Click here for the Project Link 2. Ombre by Lauren ConradJust set your color scheme and go wild with the glitter. You can always count on Lauren to add some sparkle where she goes. Click here for Project Link. 3. Paint {or Marker} a cityscape from Fraulein KleinThe beautiful photos in this Project make translation unnecessary. Just grab an ultra thin brush and get creative. Click here for Project Link 4. Add a Twist with Camille StylesAgain, I love that you can customize the colors and that every egg turns out different. Inspired by Design Mom, Camille gives a beautiful step by step. Plant dyes never come out the color that I expect but they are always beautiful and I love the prints that the herbs make.
