When I began this series, I thought that it was a study in balance in black and white. I was eating lunch when my muse whispered in my ear “try this.” That afternoon I had painted the first two layers of 9 little works. The paint kept flowing from there onto larger canvases and smaller ones. As I started naming the works, I realized the theme of hiding and revealing was in nearly every work. I do recognize that the process of becoming an artist has, for me, been a discovery of myself. Somehow this collection of works was asking me to examine what I have tried to hide from others and what I have hidden from myself.
In some of the works, the black and white have muddied into greys that may be the struggles we feel when we try to embrace the secrets of our hearts. Our indecision, our fear of the vulnerability that comes with being and using our unique voice is within those grey areas. These are the internal battle of the entrepreneur who questions whether the dream is a possibility or a pipedream. Conforming or standing out, following our instincts or doing what we have always done, hoping for magic or being practical; these are the battles of the greys. And still the white pushes and persists.
