What we hide from others and ourselves is not always as well disguised as we might think.
The broad strokes of black represent the veil of privacy that buries what we don’t want to see or what we hope others won’t notice. But the black has cracks and streaks where our truth has begun to seep through. Some of these minute fissures will surely close again regaining that façade of normality. Others are gaps that have no hope of closure and the white shines through. The white is persistent in its desire to be seen. As with the treasures deep within us, it tries in so many ways to come out and make itself known.
We all exist in various stages of disguise and it shifts throughout our lives. Our veils may feel like they protect us but they may in fact limit us. Vulnerability may be the path to feeling the freedom of our truest nature. The choice is one that we each face many times over our lifetimes. |
In some of the works, the black and white have muddied into greys that may be the struggles we feel when we try to embrace the secrets of our hearts. Our indecision, our fear of the vulnerability that comes with being and using our unique voice is within those grey areas. These are the internal battle of the entrepreneur who questions whether the dream is a possibility or a pipedream. Conforming or standing out, following our instincts or doing what we have always done, hoping for magic or being practical; these are the battles of the greys. And still the white pushes and persists.
The large and small bands of gold are those unchangeable truths that we have locked into our consciousness. Perhaps they are holding us in balance between full exposure and full suppression. Perhaps they are locks which hold the veils in place trapping the truth of our souls. They are beliefs placed upon us that hold tight. Or perhaps they are the destiny within us that helps create the cracks for the light to shine through.
